Reports to: Communications & Multimedia Supervisor

Job Summary: The Newsletter Publisher is responsible for developing, producing, and distributing the Onion Lake Cree Nation newsletter. The position works with OLCN departments to gather and communicate community news, programs, events, leadership updates, cultural initiatives, and success stories while ensuring content is accurate, engaging, culturally appropriate, and consistent with OLCN communication and branding standards.

Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and maintain a monthly newsletter content calendar.

  • Coordinate with OLCN departments to gather updates, announcements, stories, photographs, and other relevant content.

  • Ensure balanced representation of programs, services, events, leadership messaging, and community initiatives.

  • Write, edit, proofread, and format newsletter content in a clear, engaging, and culturally appropriate manner.

  • Ensure all content is accurate, approved, and aligned with OLCN messaging and communication standards.

  • Simplify complex information into clear, plain-language communication for community members.

  • Design and format newsletters using approved templates and branding standards.

  • Incorporate photographs, graphics, highlights, and other visual elements to improve readability and engagement.

  • Ensure consistency in layout, formatting, style, and visual identity.

  • Produce and publish the newsletter according to the established monthly schedule.

  • Coordinate distribution through social media, the OLCN website, OLCN App, email lists, and print distribution where applicable.

  • Ensure newsletters are accessible and distributed accurately and on time.

  • Assist with the internal review and approval process prior to publication.

  • Ensure content is error-free, properly credited, and approved by the appropriate departments.

  • Maintain editorial and communication standards.

  • Maintain an organized digital archive of all published newsletters.

  • Organize newsletter content and related materials for future reference, reporting, and community storytelling.

  • Gather feedback from leadership, departments, and community members.

  • Identify opportunities to improve newsletter content, layout, accessibility, and distribution.

  • Support the integration of newsletter content with other Public Relations platforms, including podcasts, radio, livestream highlights, and other communication initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or certificate in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field, or equivalent experience

  • Minimum 1–3 years of experience in writing, editing, or content development

  • Experience in newsletter production, publishing, or digital communications

  • Strong writing, proofreading, and editing experience

  • Experience with design and layout tools (e.g., Adobe InDesign, Canva, or equivalent)

  • Experience managing content calendars and coordinating submissions

  • Experience in a First Nations or community-based environment is considered an asset

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital publishing platforms
