Position: Lands Manager

Reports to: Lands Director

 

Job Summary: This position reports to the Director of Lands. The Lands Manager is responsible for supervising the Boundary Patrol and Bison Caretaker positions. This position is responsible for managing Onion Lake Cree Nation Lands under the direction of the Director of Lands. The Lands Manager will work in the daily operations of the Lands Department. The Land Manager will manage and assist in the monitoring of all projects on Onion Lake Cree Nation lands.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Inform the Director of any land, environmental, or boundary-related issues arising on Onion Lake Cree Nation lands.

  • Issue permits for gravel extraction and coordinate approvals with external stakeholders such as SaskTel, SaskPower, ATCO, and other relevant organizations.

  • Manage land allotments, including mediating land-related issues and resolving disputes.

  • Assist with Treaty Land Entitlement (TLE) matters as requested.

  • Support and maintain agricultural activities within Onion Lake Cree Nation.

  • Collaborate with the Environmental Monitor in accordance with ISC regulations.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of land use policies.

  • Identify and report potential bylaw violations.

  • Investigate or support investigations into environmental concerns, including illegal waste dumping.

  • Prepare and compile reports on issues impacting Onion Lake Cree Nation lands.

  • Ensure all duties are carried out in accordance with the Indian Act and applicable regulations until a Lands Governance framework is established.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Lands in alignment with the responsibilities of the role.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Certificate or Diploma in First Nations Land Management

  • Post-secondary education in Land Management, Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, or a related field. 

  • A combination of relevant education and experience in lands, environmental management, or First Nations governance will be considered. 

  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.

  • Required competencies include: Report writing, GPS, Land Conversions, pasture management, forest management, project management, crop production, reclamations, surface leases, hunting, monitoring, soil & water testing, environmental monitoring, community development and land regulations and community consultations.
