Position:  Heavy Equipment Operator - Roads

Department:  Public Works - Roads

Job Classification: Full-Time (Safety Sensitive)

Reports to: Public Works Director

Job Summary: The Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment in support of community infrastructure. This includes maintaining roads, ditches, approaches, driveways, and gravel pits. The HEO must be able to work in extreme weather conditions and be available to work after hours as required.

Responsibilities: 

  • Perform daily safety inspections and routine maintenance checks on equipment.

  • Clean heavy equipment as scheduled and/or required.

  • Ensure all equipment is safely and securely stored when not in use.

  • Report maintenance and repair needs to the Public Works Director.

  • Follow and promote all workplace safety policies and procedures.

  • Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies.

  • Maintain roads and transportation systems to ensure safe roadways within the community.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Public Works Director.

Qualifications:

  • Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate or equivalent experience.

  • Knowledge of truck and equipment safety practices.

  • Experience operating heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, dozers, graders, and similar machinery.

  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance, care, and storage procedures.

  • Understanding of road construction and maintenance techniques.

  • Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures.

  • Ability to lift heavy objects and perform physically demanding tasks.

  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
