Job Summary:

The GIS Technician is responsible for maintaining and operating the Lands & Resources Department’s Geographic Information System (GIS) to support the management of Onion Lake Cree Nation lands. This position assists the Lands Department with the collection, compilation, analysis, and management of GIS data, including the preparation of maps, databases, and reports for planning and land management purposes. The role also supports land monitoring and information gathering through the operation of departmental drone technology.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Compile geographic information using satellite imagery, geographical surveys, and aerial photographs.

  • Enter new collected data into the GIS database and ensure data accuracy.

  • Create maps using advanced GIS and mapping software.

  • Annotate and compile maps with correct and up-to-date information.

  • Prepare reports using all available GIS and GPS data sources.

  • Maintain the GIS database and troubleshoot data issues as they arise.

  • Travel to geographic sites to conduct land surveys as required.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Strong understanding of GIS and integrated GPS principles.

  • Advanced computer programming and data analysis skills.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Proficiency in GIS and mapping software (e.g., ArcGIS, AutoCAD).

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

  • Ability and willingness to travel as required for fieldwork.
